The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has commended the Management of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) for its innovative approach to higher education delivery, judicious management of internally generated funds and overall contribution to education in Ghana.

He says the massive infrastructural developments underway at the UPSA Campus is an illustration of how tertiary institutions can mobilise resources to solve their own challenges.

Dr Bawumia made these remarks at an investiture ceremony held on Thursday, June 16, to swear in Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong as the new Chancellor of UPSA.

The Vice President noted that the introduction of government’s free Senior High School (SHS) policy in 2018 has more than doubled the number of students to the various tertiary institutions.

To this end, it was imperative for higher education institutions to equip themselves by being innovative and proactive in order to absorb the growing numbers of SHS graduates.

“I must take this opportunity to commend the leadership of the UPSA for the immense contribution to education in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said. “Government is grateful that the UPSA continue to lead the way in the constructive use of internally generated funds to benefit the University community and our country Ghana.

“I am reliably informed that in addition to the construction of the new twin tower building on this campus, a new 1600-bed capacity hostel facility was opened in March this year and a second new hostel is expected to be completed by July this year to meet the demands of the government Free SHS policy. [This is] very remarkable.”
