Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia on Friday, March 1, 2024, commissioned the University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium ahead of the 13th All African Games set to begin on March 8, 2024.

The construction of the Stadium, started under the leadership of former President John Agyekum Kufuor in the year 2004.

However, after 20 years, the facility is ready and will be hosting the field and track disciplines of the games.

The facility include a 10,000 capacity stadium, a modern mondo track for athletics, warm-up athletic track and a rugby stadium.

During the commissioning of the Stadium, Dr. Bawumia said apart from hosting the event here in Ghana, the infrastructure will greatly benefit in the future development of talents in the country.

“Our vision and commitment has paid off and today, Ghana has built world class sports facilities which are not only making it possible for us to host the African games, but will also leave the country a huge infrastructural legacy which will significantly impact sports development in the country,” he stressed.

While expressing his appreciation to former President John Agyekum Kufuor for initiating the construction of the facility, he also mentioned that the construction of various facilities across the country, shows how seriously the New Patriotic Party (NPP) takes sports.

“I would like to thank for President Kufuor for his vision to build a stadium for the nation’s premier university. Our government has taken sports and sports infrastructure very seriously and this University of Ghana Sports Stadium also adds to the impressive list of sports infrastructure our government has constructed over the last seven years including 10 multi-purpose stadia we are building in the 10 old regions, and we have completed 6 out of the 10, and we expect the other 4 to be completed this year,” he added.

The games, which Ghana is hosting for the first time since 1965, is scheduled to start on March 8, 2024, and end on March 23, 2024.
