The Akufo-Addo led Government’s decision to seek financial and economic bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has received a lot of backlash from a section of the Ghanaian people including the opposition National Democratic Congress.
A financial Economist, Mr. Peter Kwame Kuutol has called for the head of the Ghana’s Finance Minister, Mr. Ofori Atta to be sacked from his post.
Mr. Peter Kwame Kuutol, a former Chartered Financial Lecturer at the Presbyterian University College in Abetifi in the Eastern Region, has said, President Akufo-Addo must as a matter of urgency relieve off the finance minister from his position.
According to Mr Kuutol while discussing the country’s economic discrepancies with Kwame Koranteng on Anɔpa Dawuro on Republic Fm, Monday, July 4, said, he does not see why the President has kept mute on the indiscipline behavior of Mr. Ofori Atta.
He added that, the Vice President, Mr. Bawumia who is supposed to be in charge of the Economic management team (EMT) has been sidelined and now a poster boy. According to him, Dr. Bawumia has now been reduced to a digitization man.
“He is not.. I can tell you on authority that the vice President Dr. Bawumia is not in control. He remains the poster boy, he is now a digitization man. He has been reduced from the Economic Management team to digitization Man and this is because he is not being allowed to work, let’s us be frantic”.
Mr. Kutool argued that the issues that has led the country to IMF was the same issues he was professing when during the days of his economic lectures. He was of the view that, the Vice President knew about the issues and the problems and therefore, what has changed?
“These issues we are talking about that led us to the IMF were the same issues he was telling us during the time he used to organize economic lectures and today, what has changed? And every right thinking Ghanaian can draw a conclusion that he is not in charge and let us not lie to ourselves, he is not in charge, Ken Ofori Atta is in charge and I don’t know why the President cannot touch him because he has to go for the country to love forward.
He has no credibility to lead the IMF program and I keep on insisting because he has said it on several times that we are not going to IMF so why the sudden turn? He has demonize IMF and why are we going there today and if he has shame, he should resign because elsewhere, he would have been kicked out but the President seems not to be bothered”, he told Kwame Koranteng.
President Akufo-Addo on Friday, July 1, 2022 ordered the finance minister to begin a formal agreement with the International Monetary Fund for an economic bailout. President Akufo-Addo has consistently blamed the economic crisis on the covid-19 pandemic and the soviet union upsurge, spanning a war between the Russia and Ukraine for sometime now.
