New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday paid courtesy visits to former Presidents J A Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo after his primary victory.
The visits, held at separate times at the residences of the two former leaders, formed part of a 24-hour appreciation tour following his decisive win in the party’s presidential primaries last Saturday.
In a social media post after the engagements, Dr Bawumia said he used the opportunity to acknowledge the role both former presidents played in the party’s internal electoral process and its broader growth over the years.
“Yesterday, I paid courtesy visits to H. E. President John A. Kufuor and H. E. President Nana Akufo-Addo,” he wrote.
He added that he “expressed gratitude to them for their contributions towards our party’s successful primaries” and assured them of his “commitment to leading a united and stronger party for our collective victory in 2028.”

Dr Bawumia’s visits came days after he was retained as the New Patriotic Party’s flag bearer, having previously led the party into the December 2024 general election, which he lost to then candidate John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.
The primaries were held nationwide on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with delegates voting to choose a leader to steer the party into the 2028 general election. Official results showed Dr Bawumia polling 110,643 valid votes, representing 56.5 percent, placing him comfortably ahead of the field.
His closest challenger, Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, secured 46,554 votes, equivalent to 23.8 percent. Observers described the outcome as an unexpectedly weak showing for the outspoken lawmaker, especially against earlier expectations of a tightly contested race.
Bryan Acheampong, widely viewed as a dark horse, placed third with 36,303 votes, representing 18.5 percent.
The remaining candidates trailed significantly, with Bosomtwe MP Yaw Adutwum polling 1,999 votes and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong recording 402 votes.
Following the declaration of results, party executives, supporters and grassroots members gathered at the party’s national headquarters, where formal steps were taken to confer the mandate on Dr Bawumia.

In subsequent engagements, the former Vice President emphasized unity, signaling his intention to work closely with his former rivals.
Other aspirants echoed this call, indicating their readiness to support him as the party intensifies preparations for the 2028 polls.
