The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured Ghanaians that he will sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law if he is elected president in the upcoming elections.
The proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, is currently awaiting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s approval.
However, its progress has been delayed due to legal challenges regarding its constitutionality. The Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the matter on December 18.
Addressing a congregation at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to endorsing the bill once the legal hurdles are resolved.
“There are many policies or works that are not completed yet. And I know that when I come into power, I will do these works to make sure that everyone is happy,” he said.
He highlighted two pending policies in Parliament that he plans to prioritize if elected, including the anti-LGBTQ+ bill and the Anti-Witchcraft bill. “When I come to power, I will sign [the LGBTQ+ bill] without hesitation,” Dr. Bawumia assured.
Dr. Bawumia’s stance aligns with the ongoing national debate over the controversial bill, which has drawn both local and international attention.
