BE/R: Kintampo SHS wins 6th edition of Renewable Energy challenge

The Kintampo Senior High School (SHS) has been crowned winner of the sixth edition of the Energy Commission’s Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge, walking away with a total package of pecuniary and other items.

At the challenge held in Nkoranza on Thursday, 29th May, 2025, with nine (9) senior high and technical schools, the winner, Kintampo SHS, came first with 68.3 points, beating Nkoranza Senior High and Technical school, who scored 67.3 points in second position, and Jema SHS in third place respectively with 66.7 points.

The others were Atebubu SHS, Mount Camel Girls SHS, Nkwabeng Technical Institute, Techiman Technical Institute, Yeji SHS and Amanteng SHS.

The programme was organised by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service under the theme: “Sustainable for a Healthy Future.”

Participating schools were expected to develop a project using renewable energy technologies for a sustainable healthy life, food security and waste management.

During the competition, each school was given ten minutes to explain and demonstrate the environmental and health benefits of their product or innovation, after which judges ask questions of each team.

The winners presented a solar dehydrator designed to address issues relating to losses of fruits and vegetables and to save lives.

Mr Julius Nkansah-Nyanko, the General Manager, Renewable Energy Commission, in an exclusive interview with Fabea FM’s Apiah-Kubi, said the competition stood as a beacon of hope, helping to bridge the gap between academia and industry, adding that the renewable energy was central to the nation’s energy transition and its overall social-economic development.

“We take the innovative ideas from the students very seriously and aim to improve upon the things they brought during the challenge”, Mr. Julius emphasized.

He congratulated the winners and encouraged them to work harder as they prepared to represent the region at the zonal level.

He also urged the remaining schools not to be discouraged because the commission has offers for them so that their job will not be in vain.

On the side of the Bono East Regional STEM coordinator, Mr. David Mensah, expressed that students did well and he is thrilled to hope that the student’s works would be acknowledged for future prosperous.

“I believe the students can use their projects as employable skills for themselves”, Mr Mensah stated.

organisers, sponsors, teachers and students for the good job done.

He noted that though it wasn’t easy to win the challenge, they will not disgrace the region and bring joy.
