Political Parties Unite to Protest Suspension of Chief Justice and Unlawful Terminations Accra, Ghana – In a show of unity and defense of Ghana’s constitutional order, several political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM), will stage a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025.
The protest is in response to the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice and concerns over the termination of appointments.
The parties believe this move is an assault on the judiciary’s independence and a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Concerns Over Judicial Independence
The parties cited the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) past attempts to intimidate the judiciary, including a failed plot in 2010 to remove former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.
They argue that the current suspension of the Chief Justice is part of a larger agenda to control the judiciary.
Allegations of Power Grab
The parties also expressed concerns over potential plans to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and her deputies, which could pave the way for political control over key institutions.
They warned that this could lead to a constitutional interpretation that would legitimize a third term for former President John Mahama in the 2028 elections.
Call to Action
The parties are calling on all Ghanaians to join the protest and defend the country’s democracy.
They emphasize that this is a fight for Ghana’s future and the protection of its constitutional order.
The demonstration aims to promote justice, defend democracy, and protect the independence of the judiciary.
The parties urge citizens to stand up against what they see as an erosion of democratic foundations and the rise of authoritarianism.
