President John Dramani Mahama has stated categorically that the newly launched Big Push infrastructure programme is strictly for qualified and capable contractors.
According to him, the initiative is not for small-scale or unqualified operators.
He revealed this at the official launch of the programme at Afienya in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
At the event, the President said he had received requests from individuals he described as “wheelbarrow contractors” seeking to benefit from the initiative.
But he was emphatic that the project is not for such contractors.
“There are a few wheelbarrow contractors who have come to me saying, ‘Oh, I hear they are distributing projects under the Big Push. I want one.’ I say, ‘My friend, this is not for wheelbarrow contractors.’ You are my friend, but I won’t give it to you because it is not meant for wheelbarrow contractors,” he said.
He further asserted that the government has selected experienced local and foreign contractors who would be in charge of the various projects.
The first set of projects to commence included the Dawhenya Afienya Dodowa Road, the Tema Aflao dualization first phase, the Ashaiman Asikuma dualization, the Oyibi Apolonia Afienya Road, the Dodowa Somanya and Somanya Town Roads, and the Shai Hills Dodowa Road.
Additionally, stalled projects, such as the Dome Kwabenya to Ketase Road, the Ofankor Nsawam Road, the Adenta Dodowa dualization, and the Beach Road from Black Star Square to Tema, had been repackaged into the Big Push initiative.
As part of the Big Push, the government will invest a US$10 billion accelerated infrastructural plan to drive job creation and prioritise the completion of uncompleted and abandoned government infrastructural projects across all sectors.
