The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has said that the new verification system would help prevent double voting and electoral fraud.
This comes after the commission decided to try the new technologies stipulated for the 2024 election at the District level.
According to her, with the new system, one can endeavour to vote once because the biometric captures the facial and fingerprint of the voter.
“The biometric technology makes it difficult for a person who has been verified and cast their vote to come a second time. Because once you have been verified, it goes into the system, and you cannot return a second time. So you can try it if you wish at this election. Of course, it will be deemed an electoral offence. Still, because of biometric technology, your facial features are recognized, or your fingerprints are recognized, you cannot go a second time,” she said.
The district election comes off today, December 19 and over 66,000 people have vied for assembly and unit committee slot across the country.
