The Birim North District Assembly in Ghana’s Eastern Region has taken steps to support girl-child education by distributing sanitary pads to female students in basic and senior high schools.
This initiative aims to improve menstrual hygiene management, reduce teenage pregnancy, and ensure girls stay in school.
The Assembly distributed 20,730 sanitary pads to school-going girls in the District.
The District Chief Executive, Mr. Hakeem Antwi Abdul, emphasized that the provision of sanitary pads is both a welfare and educational intervention, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of the girl-child. The distribution covered several schools in the district, with the goal of boosting confidence, improving attendance, and enhancing academic performance among female students.
This effort is part of a broader government initiative to provide free sanitary pads to 1.3 million female students in basic and secondary schools, with a budget allocation of GH¢292.4 million. The government has also pledged to source sanitary pads from local manufacturers, supporting Ghanaian businesses and promoting import substitution.
The impact of this initiative is expected to be significant, reducing absenteeism and promoting menstrual hygiene management among schoolgirls.
