The District Chief Executive for Birim North, Antwi Hakim Abdul, has directed Sikadwaso Mining Company Ltd to immediately halt all of its operations in the Kwaakru Forest Reserve in the Abirem area, pending the outcome of investigations.
This decision follows a demonstration by traditional leaders and residents from Amenam and surrounding communities last week Thursday, who voiced strong opposition to the mining activities in the protected forest area.
Speaking to the media, the MCE emphasized the importance of community consultation and compliance with environmental regulations.
He pointed out that while the Minerals Commission oversees licensing, the involvement of chiefs and local stakeholders is crucial.
He added that halting the operations will help protect the forest and safeguard the livelihoods of the local population while investigations are ongoing.
Community leaders have welcomed the move, describing it as a victory for environmental protection and local rights.
