The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North, Abdul Hakeem Antwi has presented special awards to the best-performing students in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the district.
The awards ceremony, held at the Abirem Durbar grounds at New Abirem on Friday, September 4, was aimed at motivating students and recognizing academic excellence among basic school pupils in the district.
The best overall student, who excelled with aggregate 6, received citations, educational materials, cash prizes for her Senior High School education.
Presenting the awards, Mr. Antwi commended the students, their teachers, and parents for their hard work and dedication, which led to an improvement in the district’s BECE performance compared to last year.
“Education remains the top priority of this government. We want to encourage healthy competition among our students and reward excellence. If you learn hard, we will recognize you,” he said.
He stated that the Assembly, in collaboration with the District Education Directorate, will continue to invest in education through the provision of infrastructure, furniture, and learning materials to enhance teaching and learning.
The DCE also urged students who did not win awards not to be discouraged but to work harder in their next academic journey.
The Birim North District Director of Education, Solomon Azubilla Akuruko, praised the DCE for the initiative and said it will motivate students to take their studies seriously.
He revealed that Birim North recorded over 80% pass rate in the 2026 BECE, an improvement from 69% in 2025, and attributed the success to interventions by the Assembly, teachers’ commitment, and parental support.
Some of the award-winning students expressed gratitude to the DCE and promised to continue to make the district proud in their SHS education.
Present at the ceremony were traditional leaders, heads of departments, teachers, parents, and students.
