Assembly Members in the Birim North District Assembly in the Eastern Region have failed to elect a Presiding Member for the third consecutive time in a roll.
The District Chief Executive, Raymond Nana Damptey told myrepubliconline.com that the Assembly Members have refused to come to an agreement to elect a PM.
The Members failed to elect any of the two aspirants, a male and a female during a Local Government training and workshop organized for the Assembly Members on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
“We’re supposed to have a pressing member. This is the third time we’ve failed to elect a Presiding member but I think that the Assembly Members do not know the importance of having a PM. Today we had a full house, we all decided to hold an election to elect a PM. I don’t know what else to do, but of course, this is going against most of the things we’re supposed to do. We’ve had major projects stalled because we don’t have the approval of a Presiding Member”, he said.
Allaying fears of not getting a steadfast development due to the failure to elect a PM, Mr. Damptey revealed that the absence of the PM will retrogress approval of some important projects that need to be executed as early as possible.
Article 244 (2) of the 1992 Constitution requires that a Presiding Member shall be elected by at least a two-thirds majority of all the members of the District Assembly.
