A devastating inferno tore through the Kejetia Dubai Market earlier today (April 20, 2026), resulting in the total destruction of one shop and causing significant damage to more than 20 others.

The incident reportedly began at approximately 8:25 am near Gate 4 of the market complex.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire originated at shop number F2230, a retail outlet specialising in matches, candles, and polishing agents.

While the exact cause remains under investigation, the combustible nature of the stock within the initial premises allowed the flames to spread rapidly to neighbouring stalls.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised and, following a rigorous battle against the flames, successfully managed to extinguish the blaze and prevent further escalation.

In an interview with FrontlineonRainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Akwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, expressed deep frustration over the recurring safety issues within the facility.

He highlighted a critical lack of water infrastructure, noting that the insufficient number of fire hydrants and internal water pipes made it exceptionally difficult for emergency responders to combat the outbreak effectively.

Mr Prempeh issued an urgent appeal to the market authorities and the government to prioritise the resourcing of the market’s dedicated fire station.

He stressed that without a reliable water supply and enhanced security protocols, the livelihoods of thousands of traders remain at risk.

The Federation is now calling for a comprehensive review of safety measures to ensure such a disaster is not repeated.
