Traders at Kumasi’s Blue Light Market, still reeling from the recent fire that destroyed their shops and livelihoods, have received a GHC200,000 donation from the Minority Caucus in Parliament to help ease their recovery.

The donation was presented during a brief ceremony in Kumasi, where the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed solidarity with the affected traders. He described the incident as heartbreaking and called on the government to act swiftly to support those whose lives had been upended by the blaze.

“We sympathize deeply with all the traders who have lost their businesses. The government must show the same level of urgency and compassion as it has in other similar tragedies,” Afenyo-Markin said, urging the activation of the national Contingency Fund to provide additional relief.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the traders, Joseph Bobie Ansah, Chairman of the market trader’s association, thanked the Minority for their timely support.

“We are deeply grateful for this gesture. It will go a long way to ease the burden on our members who have lost everything,” Mr. Ansah said.

The fire, which swept through the busy Adum market area, left dozens of traders counting heavy losses, with many now depending on public goodwill to rebuild their livelihoods.
