The leading opposition party, New Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Kwamina Yedu Addison, has planned to spend $250 million on a new head office for the central bank.
According to the NDC, such a move is reckless considering the fact that the governor and his deputies have collapsed the BoG.
Speaking during a press at the NDC headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, minority leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, accused the governor of mismanaging the resources of the country.
“The governor has shown that he is incompetent, he doesn’t care about the livelihood of the central bank because clearly, he has failed on the constitutional mandate of price stability. He, single-handedly working with his deputies, has run the central bank down. As if that is not enough, knowing that the central bank has collapsed, he has further gone out there to decide that he is going to build head office worth GH₵3 billion ($250m) at this critical time,” he said.
“Which of you will believe that the Bank of Ghana in this level of crisis, self inflicted, will be building a $250 million new headquarters? Right opposite the Ridge Hospital is the BoG new headquarters as if something is wrong with the old headquarters. You are broke, you have actually collapsed the economy, the next thing you will do is to award a $250 million project.” minority whip, Kwame Agbodza also added.
The NDC has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the governor and his deputies to resign and threatened that they will march to the premises of the BoG to demand their removal if they do not wilfully resign within the stipulated time.
