Tensions have flared once again in Bawku, as violence reignited in the wake of Alhaji Seidu Abagre’s return from exile.
On Saturday, a commercial driver known as Maadi was killed, and his vehicle was set ablaze while he was en route to Bolgatanga. His death marks the 21st fatality amid escalating clashes in the region.
The resurgence in violence follows a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, which quashed an arrest warrant issued against Abagre in February 2023.
Abagre, who had fled Bawku after the warrant was issued due to a contested chieftaincy installation in Nalerigu, returned to the area on October 26.
His arrival has since reignited a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, resulting in sporadic gunfire that has claimed two additional lives and left several others injured.
In response to the violence, local authorities have imposed a 6:00 am to 6:00 pm curfew in Bawku.
Security forces are actively patrolling the area to enforce the curfew and curb the violence as residents brace for potential further unrest.
