Residents of Jamdede in the Berekum West District of the Bono Region have turned the Jamdede/Adom Basic School located in the area, into a toilet facility where they engage in open defecation.

The situation has resulted in the teachers threatening to boycott teaching if the practice persists.

Mr Emmanuel Sakratu, Assistant Headmaster of the school, who expressed worry over the situation, in an interview, explained that the situation is pathetic.

He indicated that the newly built classroom block was commissioned and handed over to the school by the District Assembly few weeks ago.

“What they saw in the School was soo pathetic that residents always defecate in the class rooms where teaching and learning take place and this is not the first time this is happening.”

He said for current academic year the indiscriminate defecation in the school has occurred many times blaming the incident on the state of the classroom block which is without doors and windows, giving intruders free access.

“The cause of all these things is that, there are no windows and doors in the classrooms. We’ve complained to the Assembly but there is no good response. If this defecation issue persist, there will be no more teachers going to the classrooms to teach.” Mr Emmanuel Sakratu said

Reacting to the situation, the District Chief Executive for Berekum West, Hon. Isaac Osei said that he will make sure that windows and the doors are provided for all the classrooms.

The Assembly Member for the Area, Hon. Eric Ankamah pleaded with teachers to go back to the class.
