Bring back Alan – Akomea tells Bawumia

A leading member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s camp, Nana Akomea, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider reconciling with former party stalwart Alan Kyerematen as part of efforts to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Nana Akomea said he would strongly support any move by Dr. Bawumia to reach out to Alan Kyerematen if consulted on the matter.

Responding to a question from host Evans Mensah on whether Dr. Bawumia should engage the former Trade Minister, Nana Akomea said, “It should be on the cards.”

According to him, political parties are constantly seeking to attract new supporters, including neutrals and members of rival parties, making it equally important to reconnect with former loyalists who already share ties with the NPP.

“If I’m one of his advisers and he asks me, I will say yes, because this work that you are doing as a political party, you are targeting even the NDC, you want to win over NDC supporters,” he stated.

He described former members who left the party as part of the NPP’s “natural constituencies,” stressing that time may have healed the misunderstandings and grievances that caused divisions within the party.

“Basically, these people left because of some hurt feelings or misunderstanding. With the passage of time, you can bring them back,” he added.

Asked directly whether the time was right to bring Alan Kyerematen back into the fold, Nana Akomea answered in the affirmative.

“That is one of the deals, especially for Alan specifically, and everyone else,” he said, adding that if approached and willing to return, it would benefit the party.

“And if he’s approached and he wants to come back, all the better for the party,” he noted.

Although he admitted Dr. Bawumia had not personally discussed the issue with him, Nana Akomea maintained that he would advise reconciliation if consulted as part of the former Vice President’s inner circle.

He further argued that if the NPP is willing to court supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), then rebuilding bridges with former party faithful should not be difficult.
