The Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong has sympathized with the family of deceased Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party’s 2025 Presidential Primaries noted with sorrow, the sudden passing of the young Parliamentarian.
In a Facebook post, dated Monday, July 7, the MP noted the selfless and dedicated Kumi, who has not only had the interest of his party at heart but that of the people of Akwatia.
“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
Kumi was more than just a colleague; he was a brother, a loyal patriot, and a dedicated servant of the New Patriotic Party and the people of Akwatia. His calm spirit, sharp intellect, and unshakeable commitment to duty made him a standout leader among the younger generation of our party.
Although he sat on the minority side of the House, the Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi never lost sight of the bigger picture: a better Ghana. His passion for service, his humility, and his deep respect for others earned him admiration across the aisle“,
I extend my deepest condolences to his family, his constituents in Akwatia, and the NPP fraternity. This is a painful loss, especially at a time when our party needs every good man and woman to rise in unity“, the statement said.
The Eastern Regional Communications Director for the NPP, Evans Osei Yeboah (Chooboi) in a phone conversation with Republic Online’s Andy Frimpong Manso confirmed the MP had complained of pressure (heart seizure) where he was pronounced dead, a few hours after seeking medical support at Lester Hospital in Accra.
“It’s pressure. He had heart seizure and was taken to hospital for medical assistance. He died subsequently at the Lester Hospital in Accra“, Chooboi said.
Kumi, a man born on December 1984, died at the age of 40.
His death is a big blow to Parliament and the NPP, as the legislature sombre in a sorrowful atmosphere in the House during today’s sitting.
Mr Kumi, a first-time MP on the ticket of the NPP, had recently been at the centre of a high-profile legal battle over his parliamentary legitimacy.
His sudden death comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found Kumi guilty after he defied an interim injunction barring him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP.
The court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, citing his failure to attend court hearings and his disregard for the court’s authority.
