The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has issued a public announcement informing Ghanaian traders and businesses of Burkina Faso’s decision to ban the export of grains and cereals from its territory.
According to the statement, the Government of Burkina Faso, through a joint communique dated December 19, 2023, has officially placed restrictions on the export of essential food commodities, including rice, millet, maize, sorghum, and white beans (cowpea).
The ban remains in effect as reiterated in a subsequent communique issued on November 13, 2024.
Ghanaian businesses engaged in the importation of these products from Burkina Faso have been advised to comply with the directive to avoid potential sanctions or disruptions in trade.
The Ministry urges all affected stakeholders to take note of this development and adjust their operations accordingly.
The ban is expected to have economic implications for Ghana’s food supply chain, particularly for businesses and consumers reliant on Burkina Faso’s agricultural exports.
The government has yet to outline any mitigating measures to address potential shortages or price fluctuations resulting from this restriction.
