A 33-year-old businessman identified as Andrews Amoah Ampaw, has been dragged to the Achimota Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a pastor to the tune of $57,000.

According to reports, Mr. Ampaw promised the man of God to buy him a Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle but in court, he pleaded not guilty to the charges of defrauding by false pretences.

Facts of the case revealed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ahiale indicate that the complainant, who is also an administrator of a prominent church, had entrusted Ampaw with the said amount of money.

(ASP) Stephen Ahiale added that Mr. Ampaw, residing at Weija SCC in Accra, had allegedly taken the said amount from the complainant on June 29, 2023, with the promise to procure a 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser from Dubai for the church.

The businessman after receiving the money went missing and efforts to locate him proved impossible but on February 12, 2024, officials of the Ghana Immigration Service apprehended Mr. Andrews Amoah Ampaw at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) while trying to leave the country and was handed over to Police.

Upon his arrest, the complainant identified Mr. Ampaw who subsequently confessed to the crime during interrogation.

In Court, Mr. Isaac Addo, the presiding judge granted bail to Ampaw in the amount of GH¢ 800,000 with two sureties who must prove ownership of a landed property.

Additionally, Mr. Ampaw was ordered to surrender his passport to the court registry until further notice and to report to the case investigator every Friday.
Mr. Andrews Amoah Ampaw is, however, expected to reappear in court on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
