In a tragic turn of events, a 30-year-old man has allegedly been killed by his friends during a dispute over GH₵200 in Ofaakor, a suburb of Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East municipality of the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, June 30, 2024. According to the brother of the deceased, the money was obtained from a developer who had violated a ban on noise-making in the area.
The ban, enforced by local authorities with the help of the Kasoa Odupong Ofaakor Asafo, a community group that included both the suspects and the deceased, aims to maintain peace and order.
Sources say the group had collected a fine of GH₵7,000 from the developer. However, a heated argument ensued over the distribution of GH₵200 of this amount. The deceased’s brother, Edem Saglo, who witnessed the incident, stated that the initial confrontation occurred in the afternoon. Later that night, around 11 PM, the suspects returned armed with knives, stones, and sticks, and attacked the 30-year-old man.
Edem recounted his attempt to intervene, but he was struck with a stick and rendered unconscious. “They came with a stick and stone. When I tried stopping them, they struck me down and I passed out. By the time I regained consciousness, they had weakened him too. We rushed him to the hospital but stopped by the police station to lodge a complaint. It was about some GH₵200 they were supposed to share,” he explained.
Other witnesses also tried to intervene but were threatened by the suspects wielding a knife. One witness described the brutal attack: “He pushed me to the ground. When Wofa K. tried to separate them, they pulled a cutlass. BS (Baddest Shatta) struck his jaw with a stone, and his brother hit him with a stick. He fell to the ground, and they continued the assault.”
The Kasoa Ofaako District Police Command is currently investigating the incident, while the suspects remain at large.
