Isaac Akwasi Agyei, a 38-year-old impersonating staffer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has been brought before the Assin Fosu District Court in the Central Region.
The suspect was arrested by the Assin Fosu District Police Command on August 30, 2024, for impersonating an ECG employee and defrauding customers in the Assin South District.
Agyei’s alleged scheme involved wearing ECG attire and targeting customers in rural areas such as Assin Kwafokrom and Assin Appiahkrom. Reports state he demanded GH¢50 from customers with outstanding debts above GH¢200, threatening disconnection if payments were not made. He sometimes removed service wires from meters and accepted alternative forms of payment from customers unable to meet his cash demands.
The scheme unravelled when suspicious victims alerted the Assembly Member, leading to Agyei’s arrest and detention. Following his arrest, Agyei was first arraigned on September 17, 2024, and later on September 25, where he was charged with three counts of defrauding by false pretense. Agyei pleaded not guilty and was granted bail at GH¢5,000 with a surety living within the court’s jurisdiction.
John Kwame Danso, a complainant in the case, expressed his commitment to seeing justice served, encouraging others involved to attend court hearings. Assembly Member Hon. Robert Aidoo Amissah, who reported the suspect, urged Ghanaians to be vigilant against impersonators and called for justice to deter similar incidents.
Presiding Judge His Worship Abdul Majeed Illiassu adjourned the case to November 27, 2024. The court has also required complainants, including John Abban, Robert Aidoo Amissah, John Kwame Danso, and Rafael Ludu, to consent to disclosures from the prosecutor, Inspector Matilda Osaah, ahead of the next hearing.
The ECG Central Region General Manager, Emmanuel Lumor, has since urged customers to be cautious of fraudsters posing as ECG staff.
