The Okyereko bridge over the River Ayensu in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region has been closed to traffic following the overflow of River Ayensu due to continuous rainfall.

The continuous rainfall in the past days resulted in flooding leaving several houses and farmlands in the area submerged.

In a statement from the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), the incident necessitated a diversion to road users in order to prevent any casualty.

“In the interim, motorists travelling from  Accra to Cape Coast are advised to connect through Akoti-Ojobi-Winneba road while those from Cape Coast to Accra are also advised to use the Winneba-Ojobi-Akoti junction on the N1”.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Isaac Mensah disclosed that about 150 people have been displaced, with about 70 houses have been affected by flood waters.

The Gomoa East District Director of NADMO, Robert Hackman has also advised motorists to use diverted routes given by authorities.

“ Motorists should not use the Potsin-Okyereko stretch,” Mr. Hackman added.
