The acting Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Amansea of Mankessim, Eric Ato Appiah Mends, known as Nana Badu I, a, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks after being accused of murder.
The incident took place on October 25 during a traditional festival preparation in Mankessim.
While preparing for the Nkusukum Odambea Festival, the 45-year-old chief was leading a ritual involving the sacrifice of a cow when things took a shocking turn.
According to reports, a group from another division interrupted the procession, leading to an argument.
This ended in tragedy when Nana Badu I reportedly pulled out a gun and fatally shot 52-year-old Kwesi Mekyeawo.
Following the incident, Nana Badu I went to the local police station and was later taken to court.
Prosecutor ASP Daniel Gadzo requested more time for investigation, leading to the judge’s decision to remand Nana Badu I until the next hearing on November 12.
Family members and local leaders were deeply shocked by the event. Abuapanyin Solomon Ato Budu-Hegan, head of the family, spoke out against the accused, while Nana Amoa I, another chief, asked the court to handle the case quickly and fairly.
