The Central Regional Police Command has arrested a man in connection with the suspected murder of a Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
The suspect, identified as Joshua Karry Arthur, was picked up at the residence of the deceased at Essuokyir, a suburb of Winneba, following a police investigation into the lecturer’s disappearance.
According to ASP Patrick Bentum, Acting Public Affairs Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, the lecturer was reported missing on Wednesday, May 21, by colleagues who told police they had been unable to reach him despite repeated attempts.
“Police proceeded to the lecturer’s residence at Essuokyir, where the suspect was found and arrested,” ASP Bentum confirmed in a press statement.
“During a search of the compound, officers discovered blood stains which led to a heap of sand approximately 23 metres away from the house.”
Upon further investigation, police uncovered a body buried beneath the sand. The remains, believed to be that of the missing lecturer, have since been retrieved and sent to the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Items suspected to belong to the deceased—including two Samsung mobile phones, a laptop, a 50-inch television, and a Toyota Fortuner car key—were recovered from the suspect.
“The suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations,” ASP Bentum added. “He will be put before court in due course.”
Police say investigations are ongoing.
