The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested six individuals in connection with a violent disturbance at Gomoa Dominase, which resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three security personnel.
The suspects—Adams Suleman, Onukwei Ubombo, Augustine Agomgo, Michael Okyere, Zakaria Illiasu, and Rashid Mustapha—are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, according to DSP Jones Asante, the Public Affairs Officer for the Central East Regional Police Command.
The chaos erupted during a special exercise carried out by the Gomoa East District Assembly around the onion market area. The operation, which took place on Thursday, May 22, involved the demolition of unauthorized structures in the area.
“Preliminary findings suggest that during the demolition, the operator of a grader machine accidentally ran over a man later identified as Razak Moro.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after the incident,” DSP Asante stated.
The tragic accident sparked outrage among some youth in the area, who attacked the grader operator. Police and Immigration officers deployed to the scene intervened to rescue the operator but were met with violent resistance.
The officers were pelted with stones and other objects, leaving two police officers and one immigration officer with varying degrees of injury.
“All three injured officers are receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra,” DSP Asante confirmed. “The body of the deceased has also been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
He further noted that calm has since been restored in the area, and security has been reinforced to prevent further disturbances.
“The Police Command is committed to maintaining peace and order in the region and will not hesitate to act decisively against individuals who take the law into their own hands,” DSP Asante emphasized.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
