A pregnant woman has reportedly died after a bulldozer broke down the building she was occupying in the ongoing demolition exercise at Budumburam in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

The tragedy which also left her one and half year old son in critical condition sparked an atmosphere of rage and despair.

The pregnant woman, 22, according to reports was sleeping in her room after taking medication and was with her child.

A brother of the deceased, in narrating what transpired revealed that, they still occupied the building because traditional authorities in charge of demolition had earlier communicated to the landlord that their house was exempted.

However, on Sunday March 31, 2024, heavy-duty equipment invaded the area and began pulling the building down without the deceased knowledge.

The deceased identified as Serwaa lost her life while the building collapsed on her with her son miraculously surviving.

The body has since been deposited at St Gregory Hospital where her son is also receiving treatment.

Stephen Gyamera, the landlord, who expressed shock also noted residents were unaware that the deceased was resting together with her son.

The Gomoa Fetteh traditional council with backing from the Central Regional Security Council for the past months has demolished a significant portion of the indigenous Buduburam township after completely erasing a former refugee camp situated in the town despite an earlier plan of demolishing just the camp for a market.

Several citizens and foreigners have been displaced as a result of the demolition.
