C/R: Torrential rains rip off Adankwaman SHS

A severe rainstorm has caused extensive destruction at Adankwaman Senior High School (SHS) in the Assin South District of the Central Region, just days before schools across the country are set to reopen.

The violent storm, which struck on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, was accompanied by strong winds that ripped off the roofs of key facilities, including a six-unit classroom block, the boys’ dormitory, dining hall, and several pavilions. Desks, teaching materials, and other property were also damaged in the downpour.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, as students are currently on vacation. However, the incident has left school authorities deeply concerned about the possibility of postponing reopening, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025.

According to the school’s management, the affected buildings are now unsafe for use, and there are no immediate alternative classrooms available to accommodate students.

Established over 40 years ago, Adankwaman SHS continues to depend on some mud-built structures, many of which are already in a deteriorated state.

A team from the Assin South District office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by District Director Nicholas Adusei Sarpong, visited the school to assess the extent of the damage. Mr. Sarpong described the situation as “alarming” and assured that a comprehensive report would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for urgent intervention.

Also present at the scene were the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin South, Jonathan Birikorang, and the District Director of Education, Isaac Opoku Nkum, who both pledged coordinated support to ensure the school’s facilities are restored as quickly as possible.

The incident has reignited concerns about the vulnerability of educational infrastructure in rural Ghana to severe weather events, especially as climate change continues to intensify such occurrences.
