In response to protests by unposted teachers, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government will employ 6,100 teachers from the 2023 graduate cohort to help address the backlog in postings.

Speaking to journalists on November 19, Minister Iddrisu emphasized that education remains Ghana’s largest employer and that placing trained teachers in schools is a key government priority.

“Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 6,100 teachers from the 2023 cohort. These teachers are fully accounted for in the government’s recruitment records,” he said, adding that the move will integrate qualified educators into the system and reduce part of the backlog.

He also urged the protesting teachers to return to their offices for verification and audit processes, stressing that proper identification is necessary for reinstatement and salary processing.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers from the Colleges of Education staged a peaceful protest in Accra on Wednesday, November 19, demanding immediate postings. The group, which includes teachers from the 2022 and 2023 backlog, says members have completed the Teacher Licensure Examination and national service but have yet to be assigned to schools.

The protest began at Tema Station and is expected to proceed to the Jubilee House, where the teachers plan to submit a petition to the presidency.
