The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a massive 60% boost in the prize money for winner of the current 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria.

According to CAF, the new development is part of the strategy to make African competitions more valuable commercially.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced a significant 60% increase on the prize money for the winner of ongoing TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Algeria 2022.

“The decision, that has been confirmed by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, is in line with CAF’s strategy to increase the commercial value of African competitions.”

The total prize money allocated for the tournament has been increased to US$ 7,900,000 from the US$ 5,450,000 that was paid to all the countries that participated in the previous edition of the tournament two years ago.

Following the decision, CAF has indicated that the winner will get $2 million, as opposed to the US$1,250,000 that the last champion won two years ago.

The second-place team will win US$800,000, and the third- and fourth-place teams will each receive US$500,000.

The four teams that do not go through the quarterfinals will receive $400,000 apiece, while the two nations who place second in groups of three teams will receive $300,000 each, which is the same amount as the nations that place third in groups of four teams.

Each of the teams who finished last in each group will receive $200,000.

The final is set to take place on February 4 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.
