The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to rescind its planned nationwide strike, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, March 9, 2026.

CLOGSAG announced the strike in a notice dated March 5, 2026, citing unresolved issues over salary structure and conditions of service for civil and local government staff.

The association has instructed all members to remain at home until further notice, following repeated delays by government agencies in implementing a new salary structure promised to take effect on January 1, 2025.

The union highlighted that negotiations date back to 2019, with two Memoranda of Understanding signed but not yet implemented. The intended industrial action is aimed at pressing the government to address these long-standing concerns.

But in a statement on Thursday, the NLC said the strike declaration violates the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). Under Sections 159 and 160 of the Act, a party intending to strike must serve seven days’ notice to the other party and to the Commission before taking action.

The Commission said CLOGSAG failed to comply with these legal requirements, making the strike illegal.

The NLC has summoned representatives of CLOGSAG and relevant authorities to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 2:00 pm. The Commission emphasised its commitment to maintaining a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment.
