The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Ejura, Ashanti Region, after a violent mob attack on the Ejura Police Station in the early hours of Saturday, January 11, 2025.
The unrest began on Friday, January 10, when the Police arrested a man suspected of theft around 10:00 pm.
The suspect was detained for further investigations but later complained of feeling unwell at approximately 2:20 am on Saturday. He was rushed to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical care but tragically passed away while receiving treatment.
As hospital authorities prepared to transfer the deceased’s body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, a group of community members stormed the police station, setting parts of it on fire. Another section of the mob forcibly entered the hospital and seized the suspect’s body.
The situation escalated until the Police, working with local opinion leaders, intervened to de-escalate tensions.
Their swift actions ensured no casualties were recorded during the chaos. The Ghana National Fire Service was also deployed to extinguish the flames at the police station, while military personnel joined the Police to restore and maintain order in the area.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, assured residents of their commitment to peace and security, adding that investigations are underway to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
The authorities have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as they work to prevent further disturbances.
