Former Member of Parliament for Brekum West Constituency and an astute Lawyer, Captain Rtd. Nkrabea Effah Dartey has added his voice to those expressed by the Fixing The Country Movement to immediately arrest and prosecute the leadership of #FixTheCountry campaigners for committing a treasonable offence.
According to the former military officer, the comments made by the #FixTheCountry demonstrators on August 4 suggest to many Ghanaians the plain disregard and attempt to overthrow the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
Captain Rtd. Effah Dartey said the #FixTheCountry call of having problem with the constitution itself without proffering areas and articles that they have issues with but generalizing it comes with a treasonable offence and those leaders must be arrest and charge with treason.
Speaking on Atinka TV Morning Show monitored by the Republic Press, he said in the United Kingdom a place named Hyde Park where one can say all the evil things about the Queen of England.
But, he added that outside the compound of Hyde Park, anything one says, can be held accountable. One can allege all kind of things but to make a capital statement of wanting to throw out the constitution is treasonable.
He said the group should have tabled the articles in the constitution they have issues with rather than making a general statement of abolishing the entire constitution.
“What they needed to do was to list the various articles and provisions which they have issues with and rally behind Ghanaians for their amendments rather than making capital statements of overthrowing the1992 Constitution,” Captain Rtd Effah Dartey stated.
This comes two days after the Fixing The Country Movement lead by their Convener, Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest and probe #FixTheCountry leaders over alleged treasonous comments.
Mr Bempah, on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, petitioned the IGP, Dr George Akuffo-Dampare to go after the leaders of #FixTheCountry campaigners over comments during their demonstration on August 4th.
Mr. Owusu Bempah, who describe the comments as ‘treasonous and uncalled for,’ said the leaders of the #FixTheCountry must be arrested, properly investigated and sanctioned.
“We the Fixing The Country Movement are here to present a petition to the Inspector General of Police in the connection with a comment suggesting to overthrow the 1992 Constitution or get rid of the fourth Republic in the recent demonstration of #fixthecountry.
“We found those comments treasonous and must be investigated. If you are saying fix the country and you are the same people violating the Laws if this country is totally unacceptable. We have presented our petition, we believe and know that the IGP will let the Laws take its course and bring those perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
It will be recalled that, during the #FixTheCountry demonstration in Accra, placards with varying inscriptions including #FixourEducation System now, A new Constitution, among several others were wielded by the protectors. As well as a comment by one of the leaders who said, ” they said, we are in the Fourth Republic. The first, second and third were destroyed by the military but we the youth will use our voice to destroy the Fourth Republic”.
