Actor and politician, John Dumelo has urged Ghana’s President Akufo Addo to call off this year’s independence celebration across the country.
According to Dumelo, the call is a result of Ghana’s economic challenges, and believes cancelling the event will save the country some millions of cedis.
The 2020 Ayawaso West Wuogon National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate made this appeal to the president in a Tweet on Monday, March 1, 2023, adding that Akufo Addo should rather mark the day with a televised address.
“Greetings @NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times, can you please cancel all state, regional and district Independence Day celebrations? You can do your usual ‘fellow Ghanaians’ broadcast on tv. This will save us millions of cedis. Thanks so much,” he pleaded.

This year’s event will mark Ghana’s 66th Independence celebration and will be observed across the country but the national event will be held at Ho in the Volta Region under the theme: “Our Unity; Our Strength; Our Purpose.”
