Deputy Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman in Charge of Corporate Services, Eric Asare Bossman, has hinted that this year’s elections will not be moved from December 7 to November.

This comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year opposed the EC’s plan to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections for 2024 in November.

According to Mr. Asare, the EC’s plan to move the general elections from December 7 to November will be implemented in 2028, explaining that the commission will put legislation before parliament in the coming months.

“In terms of November or December, as you may be aware, we had a meeting with our political parties, and of the major parties indicated that they don’t support the change of date from December to November in 2024. So as a commission, we knowing the law requiring that to have such a change you have to go parliament to have two-thirds of the members of parliament approving of that particular change, the commission has resolved that we are going to have the elections come December 7 as we did in 2020,” he told Joy News.

He added that, “In the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, we agreed that in the event we cannot marshall the forces of IPAC to have in 2024, the commission should take the steps to ensure that in 2028, we’re going to have in November.”

The Deputy Chairman went on to clarify that shifting the polls does not imply that it would take place on November 7; rather, it could be on any day in November.

“This must be clear, we were not talking about November 7. At the IPAC meeting, the decision was a day in November. So it can be the first Monday, a second Monday, a third Monday or Tuesday or Friday or Thursday,” he explained.
