A Chartered Economist, Mr. Enock Okonfo Okona, has backed Parliament’s decision to consider the Members of Parliament Pension Scheme.
Following concerns raised about the welfare of former Members of Parliament, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has established an eight-member ad hoc committee.
This committee’s mandate is to investigate the feasibility of implementing a pension scheme specifically tailored for MPs.
The decision to form this committee was prompted by recommendations put forth by both the Minority and Majority Chief Whips during a tribute session in memory of the late MP for Talensi, John Akologu Tia.
The recognition of MP’s welfare issues during this session spurred the initiative to address their pension concerns.
Presiding over Parliamentary proceedings on Friday, Andrew Asiamah Amoako set a two-week deadline for the committee to deliver their findings and recommendations to the house.
Speaking to Fawe Fm, Mr Enock Okonfo Okona said the Government has realized MPs take home cost the state a lot of money and if they are thinking about pension, the government should establish a providence fund that would contribute part of the MPs wages so that the state adds up to withstand ex-gratia.
He added that every worker deserves a pension allowance and if the government is willing to do that, he supports Parliament’s decision.
