The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has underscored the vital role of Ghana’s chieftaincy institution in fostering national unity, insisting that traditional leadership must serve as a force for peace and development rather than conflict.
Speaking through Daasebre Osei Bonsu III during a historic courtesy call by the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene said chiefs have a collective responsibility to promote harmony and contribute to Ghana’s progress.
He stressed that his vision extends beyond the interests of Asanteman, emphasizing that every initiative undertaken by the Asante Kingdom is aimed at advancing the development of the entire nation.
“Otumfuo does not seek things for Asanteman alone but for Ghana,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu III told the gathering.
The Asantehene further revealed that Asanteman has developed effective traditional mechanisms for resolving disputes internally, explaining that chieftaincy-related disagreements are settled within the traditional system instead of being taken to the courts.
He noted that this approach has helped preserve peace, strengthen unity and uphold the dignity of the chieftaincy institution.
Describing the visit by the Yagbonwura as a landmark event, the Asantehene said it reaffirmed the long-standing historical relationship between the Asante and Gonja kingdoms.
He observed that historical records demonstrate that the two kingdoms share deep-rooted ties and urged both peoples to continue building on that shared heritage.
According to him, the significance of the visit extends beyond a single occasion, expressing confidence that the renewed friendship and cooperation between the two kingdoms would continue for generations.
The Asantehene also announced plans for Asanteman to organize a return courtesy visit to the Gonja Kingdom as a reciprocal gesture to further deepen the relationship between the two traditional states.
He reiterated that the institution of chieftaincy should never be viewed as a source of conflict but rather as an instrument for promoting unity, peace and national development.
The Asantehene described the meeting between the two revered traditional rulers as a defining moment in Ghana’s traditional history, expressing confidence that it would be remembered as one of the country’s significant milestones in strengthening unity among its traditional authorities.
