On October 10, the Armed Forces of Burkina Faso celebrated the delivery of new NORINCO 6×6 VN22B armored fighting vehicles from China, representing a significant reinforcement of armored capabilities for the country’s Army.

The ceremony was led by Ibrahim Traoré, military officer and interim president of the African nation following a 2022 coup, and was also attended by the Minister of Defense and Veterans, Brigadier General Célestin Simpore.

According to the official statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Burkina Faso, the delivered armored vehicles will be integrated into units of the Rapid Intervention Armored Battalion (BBIR), providing “considerable firepower and high tactical flexibility on the battlefield.”

These wheeled vehicles feature a turret equipped with a 105 mm cannon, complemented by a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun for infantry engagements. They also have the option to be fitted with smoke grenade launchers, enhancing their battlefield survivability.

It is important to note that China’s military delivery to Burkina Faso did not only include the VN22B armored vehicles but also various artillery and command systems aimed at strengthening the Rapid Intervention Field Artillery Battalion.

Reports from specialized media indicate that official photos show the presence of 122 mm SH1 self-propelled howitzers, towed howitzers likely of the Chinese Type 54 model, Shaanxi trucks, and 4×4 tactical vehicles.

Furthermore, the defense partnership between Burkina Faso and China is not limited to this year. Previous deliveries include NORINCO 6×6 WZ551 armored vehicles and WMA301 tank destroyers for the country’s Army, as well as a December delivery of 6×6 VN22 and WZ-551 armored vehicles.

It is worth highlighting that, with its plans to expand its international presence, China has positioned NORINCO as a key provider of platforms for African clients, delivering armored vehicles to countries such as Mali and Kenya.

Additionally, the company participated in the 2025 International Defense and Security Fair (SITDEF), where it presented its wheeled and tracked armored vehicle offerings to Latin American delegations, seeking to compete in a market traditionally dominated by European and U.S. designs.
