China describes EU claims on zero-tariff trade with Ghana as baseless

China has rejected recent remarks by Mr. David McAllister, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, describing his comments on China’s zero-tariff trade policy with Ghana as false and misleading.

Mr. McAllister had reportedly alleged that China’s zero-tariff initiative was contributing to trade imbalances between the two countries.

In response, Chinese authorities said his assertions were “absurd and ridiculous,” emphasizing that the policy was a voluntary and unilateral measure by China to open its market further to developing countries, including Ghana.

According to the statement, the zero-tariff treatment aims to promote Ghana’s export growth and strengthen its trade balance with China.

It noted that the popularity of Chinese products in Ghana was not a result of unfair trade practices but the outcome of independent choices made by Ghanaian importers, who are attracted to the affordability and quality of Chinese goods.

“The bustling crowds at China Malls across Ghana are a clear reflection of consumer preference,” the statement said, adding that Mr. McAllister’s comments ignored the fact that China has long supported Ghana’s industrialization and agricultural modernization.

China has consistently ranked among Ghana’s top investors. Figures from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) show that China was the country’s largest investment partner during the first half of 2025, leading with 22 registered projects.

Officials say this demonstrates China’s commitment to Ghana’s economic development and mutual cooperation.

The statement further recalled that President John Dramani Mahama, during his recent state visit to China and meeting with President Xi Jinping, confirmed Ghana’s intention to finalize the early-harvest agreement of the zero-tariff policy, signaling the two countries’ shared commitment to deepening economic ties.

While acknowledging Mr. McAllister’s observation that Ghana, as a sovereign nation, has the right to choose its development partners, Chinese authorities urged European policymakers to focus on promoting fair and constructive trade relations with Africa instead of making unfounded accusations.

“Baseless defamation against other nations does not elevate one’s own stature,” the statement concluded.
