The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has received His Excellency Tong Defa, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ghana, alongside a distinguished delegation, in a courtesy visit that highlighted ways to deepened cooperation between Ghana and China in the health sector.

During the meeting, both parties explored opportunities for collaboration in healthcare delivery, infrastructure development, and traditional medicine.

 

The Minister expressed sincere gratitude for China’s sustained support, noting the deployment of Chinese medical teams to LEKMA Hospital since 2009 and the recent funding and completion of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). Noting that these initiatives have been instrumental in addressing critical health challenges and advancing medical education in Ghana.

 

Hon. Akandoh emphasized Ghana’s growing focus on the development of herbal and traditional medicine, recognizing its potential for job creation and improved healthcare services.

 

He appealed for China’s assistance in training healthcare professionals, supplying modern equipment, and fostering research partnerships to elevate Ghana’s traditional medicine sector to international standards.

 

The Minister also sought support for key national health initiatives, including President Mahama’s Free Primary Healthcare Policy and the implementation of a 24-hour economy, which demands a more robust healthcare system. Specifically, he requested aid in upgrading teaching hospitals to enhance service delivery and training capacity, as well as assistance in establishing two new regional hospitals in underserved areas.

 

Both Ghana and China reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in health and development. Minister Akandoh expressed optimism that the ongoing partnership will contribute to a healthier and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians.

 

This visit underscores the strong and growing partnership between Ghana and China in advancing healthcare infrastructure, education, and traditional medicine, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable health development.
