Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has refuted claims that a Chinese prisoner escaped while receiving treatment at the hospital.
In a statement posted on its Facebook handle, signed by its Head of Public Relations, Mustapha Salifu, the hospital disclosed that the prisoner left the hospital in the company of two prison guards after the medical examination.
“After the X-ray, he was given a brief on the procedure to be done for him, which was estimated to cost GHc606. However, he did not have sufficient funds to undergo treatment immediately and was therefore rescheduled to come back for the procedure on 9th February 2024. The prisoner therefore left the clinic and the Hospital in the company of the two prison guards. We have since not set eyes on him until we heard about his escape in sections of the media. It is therefore not true that the prisoner escaped while receiving care in the Hospital”, Mr Mustapha explained.
The Chinese national, who was serving a one-year sentence at Nsawam Prison for theft and other serious offences, was receiving medical care at Korle Bu Hospital before his escape.
The escape occurred after the individual allegedly feigned illness and was subsequently transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
