The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has urged the public to adopt responsible waste disposal habits to prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches.
Speaking at a press briefing following a sensitization exercise in selected schools within the Ga East Municipality, Municipal NADMO Director Seth Kofi Osei Kissi highlighted choked gutters and poor drainage systems as major causes of flooding.
He called for a change in public attitudes toward waste management, emphasizing that indiscriminate waste disposal blocks waterways and hinders the free flow of water, leading to floods during heavy rains.
Mr. Osei Kissi also assured residents that NADMO had implemented proactive measures to mitigate flood risks in the municipality.
These measures include community and school sensitization programs, particularly in flood-prone areas along riverbanks, as well as providing timely information from the Meteorological Agency to help residents prepare for potential flooding.
While NADMO remains prepared to provide relief items to disaster victims, Mr. Osei Kissi stressed that the primary focus of the organization is on flood prevention to minimize the impact of natural disasters.
He urged the public to cooperate with authorities and adopt responsible environmental practices to reduce the risk of flooding in the coming months.
