The Regional Environmental Analyst in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Area (STMA) has announced a ban on the sale of processed vegetables by food vendors, following findings that such vegetables are the primary source of a cholera outbreak.
To date, 789 cases and eight deaths have been reported, with the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipality now recording an alarming 85 cases daily.
Mrs. Joyce Bagina Sutherland, the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Director of Health, highlighted the growing burden on health facilities, citing shortages of medical supplies and hospital beds.
She called for immediate intervention to address the crisis.
In an interview, Mrs. Sutherland urged households to stock Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) as a first aid measure and to improve sanitation practices.
She emphasized avoiding improper disposal of human waste, which contributes to the spread of the disease by attracting flies.
She also advised the public to cover their food, particularly fried fish and other items exposed in markets, and to consume only hot food.
Additionally, families were encouraged to allow health professionals to focus on treating patients without interference.
The municipal health director urged immediate action and vigilance to curb the spread of the disease.
