Members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives have threatened industrial action, citing delays in the payment of their eleven months’ salary arrears. The group warned that healthcare services could be disrupted if the government fails to address their grievances promptly.

The coalition, representing over 6,000 nurses and midwives nationwide, disclosed that while some members have received only a single month’s payment, around 300 staff have yet to receive any salary since starting work in December 2024.

Speaking at a press conference in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, on Monday, December 15, 2025, the members described the government’s handling of the situation as deceptive. They said the Ministry of Health had promised a payment plan after settling the November salary, but no action has been taken.

Michael Makafui, one of the aggrieved nurses, expressed the personal hardships caused by the delayed payments: “We have families, rent, and daily responsibilities. Many of us have to walk long distances from hospitals to home because we haven’t been paid. We are not asking for promises — we just want our arrears settled this month.”

The coalition emphasized that without immediate intervention from the government, essential healthcare services across the country could be severely affected.
