The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in the Bono Region has intensified efforts to promote cocoa consumption as the region actively participates in the ongoing National Chocolate Week celebrations.
The annual observance, which began on February 3, will culminate on February 14, aligning with Valentine’s Day to emphasize the health benefits of chocolate and support the cocoa industry.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Bono Regional COCOBOD Administrator, Mr. Michael Paddy Kwesi Asumadu, highlighted that the Chocolate Day celebration was first introduced in 2007 to coincide with Valentine’s Day. He stated that COCOBOD executives in Accra have launched various activities to mark the occasion nationwide.
As part of the regional activities, a float will be held today through the principal streets of Sunyani to raise awareness about the benefits of cocoa consumption. Additionally, a free health screening for cocoa farmers will be conducted at Adentia, where farmers will also be treated to warm chocolate drinks.
Mr. Asumadu noted that the National Chocolate Week celebration has played a crucial role in shifting public interest towards chocolate as a symbol of love and appreciation.
The COCOBOD administrator emphasized the numerous health benefits of cocoa consumption, including its ability to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke, prevent clotting, and improve blood circulation to the heart.
Beyond health benefits, Mr. Asumadu stressed that boosting local cocoa consumption could reduce Ghana’s dependency on the global market, providing cocoa farmers with a stable and reliable income. He added that such initiatives help create a more sustainable market for cocoa while supporting the livelihoods of local farmers.
The National Chocolate Week initiative continues to gain traction across the country, with various activities designed to encourage Ghanaians to embrace chocolate as both a nutritious treat and a meaningful gift during Valentine’s Day celebrations.
