Global condom prices are set to rise sharply as supply chain disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict drive up production and shipping costs worldwide.
Malaysia-based Karex, the world’s largest condom producer, says it may increase prices by up to 30% or more if the conflict persists. Chief executive Goh Miah Kiat attributed the decision to soaring raw material and logistics costs triggered by the crisis.
The company manufactures more than five billion condoms annually and supplies major global brands such as Durex and Trojan, as well as public health systems, including the National Health Service.
The price surge is closely tied to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.
The waterway has faced severe instability after Iran reacted to US and Israeli airstrikes with threats targeting vessels, effectively halting traffic and disrupting supply chains.
Roughly 20% of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes through the strait, alongside key petrochemicals essential for manufacturing. Karex depends on oil-derived materials such as ammonia, used in latex preservation, and silicone-based lubricants.
Goh noted that demand for condoms has risen by about 30% this year, compounding supply shortages already worsened by increased freight costs and shipping delays.
He explained that economic uncertainty often drives higher demand for contraceptives, as individuals seek to avoid additional financial responsibilities.
The broader economic impact of the conflict continues to spread. Rising oil prices have contributed to higher airfares, increased fertiliser costs, and shortages of industrial gases like helium, which is critical for semiconductor production.
Manufacturers in sectors such as bottled water are also struggling with access to raw materials.
The United Nations has warned that food prices, including sugar, dairy, and fruit, are likely to climb further due to escalating transport costs.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds diplomatic efforts, as Donald Trump announced an extension of a ceasefire with Iran, pending progress in ongoing negotiations.
