Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has convened a meeting for consideration of the feasibility of establishing a satellite campus of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Akwatia in the Eastern Region.

Mr.Julius Debrah said the meeting will be held at the Jubilee House possibly on Tuesday between the chiefs and key stakeholders to deliberate on the request.

The move follows a proposal from the Chiefs of the Oseawuo Division of Akyem Abuakwa to convert part of the facilities of defunct Great Consolidated Diamond Company (GCD) into a satellite campus for training of the youth in sustainable mining methods.

According to the Chiefs, the proposal, which has been on the table for decades, will train the youth on sustainable mining and create more job opportunities .

This was disclosed during a visit to the Oseawuohene palace on Sunday where the Chief of Staff introduced the NDC parliamentary candidate ,Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq. for the September 2 by-election to the traditional leaders.

The Oseawuohene, Daasebre Dr. Asumadu Appiah, who is also Chief of Akyem Wenchi, further appealed to government to fix deplorable roads in Wenchi and the Denkyembuor District.

He also charged political parties and the security agencies to ensure a peaceful by- election and erase the constituency’a reputation for electoral violence.

Political Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, urged constituents to vote for the NDC candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq, arguing that his party’s position in government gives him greater leverage to bring development.

He also called on supporters of former MP Henry Boakye Yiadom and Erasmus Ali Koney, both contenders in the recent NDC primaries, to unite behind the candidate.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo revealed that President John Mahama has earmarked the two individuals for appointments to serve in other capacities.

Present were George Opare Addo, Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment who is also National Youth Organizer, Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Victor Smith, Ghana Ambassador to US, Marietta Brew Appiah Oppong, legal Advisor to the President, Dr. Mark Oliver Never, Eastern Regional Chairman, and Evelyn Korang, Council of State Member.
