Ghana has ushered in a new era of policing with the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the country’s new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

COP Yohuno, a seasoned officer with four decades of experience, has pledged to lead with professionalism, transparency, and accountability to meet the aspirations of the people.

Speaking after his swearing-in on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Jubilee House, he reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace and security, promising to approach his new role with the utmost seriousness and a deep understanding of the responsibilities ahead.

His appointment follows the revocation of former police chief Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s tenure, marking a significant leadership transition for the Ghana Police Service.

Announced in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, COP Yohuno’s selection was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.

The statement highlighted COP Yohuno’s impressive forty-year career and expressed confidence in his ability to spearhead the modernization and transformation of the police service.

A Career Steeped in Experience and Dedication

COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno’s rise through the ranks is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence in law enforcement. From his early days at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School to earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and an Executive MBA in Project Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), he has continually honed his skills to better serve his nation.

His professional milestones are equally remarkable. Between 2007 and 2009, he served as Divisional Commander for Accra Central and later as Accra Regional Operations Commander.

His unwavering fight against armed robbery earned him the prestigious Grand Medal for Meritorious Service in 2011. By 2012, he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), recognizing his exceptional service.

From 2013 to 2015, he served as Deputy Accra Regional Commander before becoming Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), where his leadership brought notable improvements to traffic and transport management. His rise continued as he took on roles as Director-General of Special Duties and Director-General of Administration.

In 2024, his distinguished career reached new heights when he was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police, setting the stage for his latest appointment.

A Leader Respected by Peers and the Public

COP Yohuno’s reputation as a formidable crime-fighter precedes him. Colleagues and members of the public alike have lauded his track record.

Ernest Owusu Bempah, Director of Communications at Ghana National Gas Company, remarked, “The best officer to fight crime is COP Tetteh Yohuno. He has the master code for criminals in Ghana.”

His reputation as a no-nonsense officer committed to justice has made him a beacon of hope for many seeking a safer Ghana.

A Vision for Transformation

As Ghana’s new IGP, COP Yohuno is poised to lead a new chapter in law enforcement — one that prioritizes modernization, public trust, and enhanced security.

His vast experience, coupled with his drive for reform, is expected to position the Ghana Police Service as a more responsive and effective institution.

With COP Yohuno at the helm, Ghanaians anticipate a renewed focus on professionalism, community engagement, and proactive crime-fighting strategies that will set the standard for policing in the years to come.
